The screen in the corner of the bar was cracked, but Sarah Vance’s face was still clear enough to see the professional mask of “Evening News Neutrality” beginning to slip.

“…and in a final, startling development from the London Climate Summit,” Vance said, her voice competing with the low hum of a dozen conversations. “Dr. Adrian Keller has officially announced the formation of ‘The Orosians.’ Their goal? To bury the sum of human knowledge in the Earth’s crust. Critics are already calling it the most expensive suicide note in history.”

The camera cut to a shaky, cell-phone clip from the back of the lecture hall. Keller was on screen, small and grainy, talking about gold and granite.

“…a gift of truth, not a legacy of pride,” the grainy Keller said before the clip looped back to Vance’s studio.

“The plan involves the construction of so-called ‘Granite Archives’—massive, deep-time vaults intended to survive millions of years. Inside, Keller intends to store gold tablets inscribed with a simplified language called Toki Pona. The cost? Billions in gold bullion, at a time when the global economy is teetering on the edge of a total resource collapse.”

Within seconds of the broadcast, the digital world—already frantic with news of the North Atlantic cooling—exploded.

#Orosian was trending globally by 9:00 PM. On The Stream, the reactions were a chaotic mirror of a world that knew its time was up.

@GlobalCitizen_99:
Finally. Someone is looking past the next election cycle. If we’re going out, let’s not go out as a mystery. Let’s leave a light on for whoever comes next. #OrosianMandate #TheArchives

@CisternGuard_London:
Gold? He wants to bury GOLD in the ground? My kids are living on rationed water and Keller wants to give a “gift” to a bunch of hypothetical lizards fifty million years from now? Arrest this man for treason against the living. #EatTheGold #KellerIsAJoke“

@HistoryWillJudge:
The Toki Pona idea is brilliant. It’s the only way to talk across deep-time. The Orosians aren’t just scientists; they’re the first true planetary historians. We owe the future a warning.

@TheOldRace_Official:
Adrian is a coward. Why tell them we “lost our way”? Why grovel to a species that doesn’t exist yet? If we build archives, they should see our power, not our shame. Don’t be a footnote. Be a god. #OldRace #DontBuryTheTruth

@ClimateRealist_X:
The AMOC is at 12%, and we’re arguing about gold tablets. It doesn’t matter what we bury. The “Silence” is coming regardless.

Back in his small apartment, Adrian Keller watched the feed scroll past, the blue light of the screen reflecting in his tired eyes. The praise was heartening, but the hate was a physical weight. The “Old Race” hashtag was growing fast, fueled by a slicker, more aggressive PR machine than he could ever afford.

His phone buzzed. A message from Leo Gray.

“The Orosians? Really, Adrian? It sounds like a cult. But thanks for the publicity. You’ve just made the idea of ‘Archives’ the biggest thing on the planet. Now we just have to decide what goes inside them.”

Adrian didn’t reply. He looked out the window at the dark London skyline, where the lights were beginning to flicker—the first signs of the coming grid-instability. The Fire in the Stream was burning, but it was nothing compared to the fire he knew was coming.
